U.S. News & World Report announced its 2019-2020 Best Hospitals Honor Roll on July 29, 2019. WELL is proud to announce that several of our partners made the elite list, including but not limited to NYU Langone HospitalsUniversity of Wisconsin Hospitals, and Houston Methodist Hospital.

“Being named to the Honor Roll is a significant accomplishment and will serve as a wonderful footnote as we close our first 100 years of serving the Houston region. It will also set the bar for our next 100 years,” said Marc Boom, M.D., president and CEO of Houston Methodist. “This is a tremendous achievement for our physicians and employees who dedicate themselves every day to our patients.”

The report highlights the 20 hospitals that excelled in the 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions ratings that U.S. News evaluates. Only 165 hospitals nationwide ranked in at least one specialty. Hospitals that ranked in multiple specialties received a higher overall ranking.

To compile the list, U.S. News analyzed data from roughly 5,000 medical centers and surveyed more than 30,000 physicians. It used this information to rank hospitals in 16 areas of adult complex specialty care, including cancer, cardiology, diabetes, orthopedics, and psychiatry.

“This represents a huge leap forward in the rankings for UW Health,” said UW Health CEO Dr. Alan Kaplan. “The goal for us must always be the continual improvement of patient care, but it is very gratifying to be ranked among the nation’s top 20 hospitals. I’m proud of the level of excellence our physicians and staff bring to work every day.”

Key factors in the rankings included survival rates, patient safety, specialized staff, and hospital reputation. Additionally the rate of discharge following inpatient care was a key metric in the ranking structure.

A new measure of success that impacted rankings is patient experience as measured by HCAHPS patient satisfaction surveys, accounting for 5% of the total score. Not factored into the ranking but included in the report were seven topics related to communication skills, staff responsiveness, pain management, medication harm, discharge information, and help in engaging patients in their recovery.
